The Tooshi (Fighting Spirit in English) is Tokaido’s first uniform originally developed in 1958 when karate first started becoming popular worldwide. This uniform is the standard and is associated with what karateka may nostalgically remember as the beginning. The Tooshi employs the traditional cut first developed by Tokaido with longer sleeves and longer pant legs. The Tooshi is still proudly worn today.

Product Description
Before World War II, three disciples, Taikan,
Choei, and Giryu, were taught by karate
master Eiken Shibara in a remote mountain
dojo. When the Japanese military police
attempt to seize the training hall, the three
disciples resist and soundly defeat them,
though Choei receives a crippling injury.
Afterwards, on his deathbed, their master
bids his pupils to focus their skills inward
and decide who is worthy of being his
successor and inheriting his black belt.
Taikan and Giryu, as the only two viable
candidates, follow different paths on their
journey to discovering the meaning behind
their master’s last words.

| Bubishi : The Bible Of Karate (Patrick Mccarthy)No other classic work has had as dramatic an impact on the shaping and development of karate as The Bubishi. Treasured for centuries by karate’s top masters, studied, applied, and plagarized, The Bubishi is a classic Chinese work on philosophy, strategy, medicine, and technique as they relate to the martial arts. Referred to as ‘the bible of karate’ by the famous master Miyagi Chojun, for hundreds of years The Bubishi was a secret text passed from master to student in China and later in Okinawa. Now made available to the world in paperback, incorporate its eternal insights into your martial arts training.About the Author : Patrick McCarthy is one of the few foreigners to actually teach karate-do in Japan. Moreover, he is recognized as one of the foremost authorities on the civil fighting traditions of Okinawa. He is also the first Caucasian to ever be awarded the coveted Kyoshi Seventh Dan Teacher’s License from Kyoto’s prestigious Dai Nippon Butokukai. He has been practicing karate-do for over thirty years, and has also studied Taijiquan, White Crane, Hung Gar, Monk Fist, and Five Ancestors Fist gongfu. During the mid-seventies, while pursuing a successful competitive career, McCarthy met the “Harvard Professor of the Martial Arts,” Master Richard Kim, a disciple of whose he subsequently became in 1977. After moving to Japan in 1985, he became Master Kim’s personal representative in Japan and in 1987 established the International Ryukyu Karate Research Society (IRKRS) as an outgrowth of his research. IRKRS is a non-profit, nonpolitical group of researchers and practitioners of budo, dedicated, but not limited, to the analysis, preservation, and promotion of karate-do. Mr. McCarthy is a frequent contributor to martial arts magazines throughout the world, author of The Classical Kata of Okinawan Karate, Beyond Physical Training, Kata: Karate’s Paragon of Mystery, and translator of Miyagi Chojun’s 1934 Outline of Karate-do, The Secrets of Wudang Boxing, Taira Shinken’s 1964 Ryukyu Kobudo Taikan, The Matsumura and Itosu Precepts, and the 1936 Meeting of the Okinawan Masters. Mr. McCarthy travels around the world lecturing on karate history and philosophy, kata applications, the Bubishi, and kobudo. He can be contacted for such seminars through the publisher. | ||||
| Classical Kata Of Okinawan Karate (Patrick McCarthy)McCarthy, a shorinji-ryu stylist and triple-crown winner of the North American Karate Championships in 1974, demonstrates 11 karate kata. A detailed history of Okinawan karate and biographies of 37 of its greatest patriarchs are also included. Fully illustrated. | ||||
| Black Belt Karate (Hirokazu Kanazawa)Hirokazu Kanazawa is the most respected figure in the karate world today, and a close disciple of Gichin Funakoshi, the father of modern karate and the founder of the Shotokan school. Kanazawa founded the Shotokan Karate-do International Federation in 1979, after gaining his impressive reputation in Hawaii, the U.S. mainland, and Europe as an official trainer for the Japan Karate Association.. The Shotokan Karate-do International Federation now has branches in more than 90 countries throughout the world, including the United States. In Black Belt Karate, this preeminent figure in the karate world offers a systematic approach to basic karate. Karate is a martial art that can be practiced by anyone, regardless of age or gender, and can be undertaken at any time during a person’s life. The training system employed in karate is comprised of three main areas: kihon (basics), kumite (sparring) and kata (forms). Here, using meticulously detailed explanations and illustrative photos, Kanazawa offers an intensive self-study training course designed to be accessible to beginners, as well as to those who are already at an intermediate level. If practiced continuously and diligently over the course of a year, the practitioner will be able attain black-belt-level proficiency. | ||||
| HISTORY & TRADITIONS OF OKINAWAN KARATE (TETSUHIRO HOKAMA)Tetsuhiro Hokama is one of the most prolific writers on the history of Okinawa martial arts. Unfortunately for most of us, the majority of his books are written in Japanese! This volume is a noteable exception, having been translated by Cezar Borkowski. It is formatted well, and includes samples of Hokama’s flowing calligraphy throughout, along with translations. This volume is divided into two sections and eight chapters. The first includes three parts dealing with the history of Okinawa no Karate: Origins of Martial Arts, Martial Arts Pioneers, and The Evolution of Modern Martial arts. All three sections deal exclusively with Okinawan fighting arts and teachers, and there are plenty of photographs throughout, many which have NOT been published in other books on Okinawa karate. The second section deals with training, and includes 5 Training Guide sections and one kata demonstrated by Hokama. The training guide section (pages 103-151) is a sort of appendix offers the reader a sampling of different aspects of Okinawa bujutsu. It will show the reader–but is not a teaching tool per se.Section 1 includes 3 excerpts from the Ekkinkyogi on physical practice and internal power. Part 2 covers “kappo” rescusitation techniques (8 methods, includes photos-demonstrated by Wally Jay). Part 3 covers kempo training methods (hand-hardening/”Iron Hand”) and includes the complete Seisan (shorin-ryu) kata demonstrated by Hokama himself (52 photos). Part 4 covers kakie, two man body-hardening exercises, and includes 3 specific methods.
Part 5 is perhaps the most unique: it offers a comparison between traditional Okinawa dance, and the Okinawa martial art “Ti”. The martial artist is shown standing side by side with an Okinawan dance master, in nearly identical postures. Then an application from this posture is demonstrated. Hokama’s book will serve Okinawa karate history buffs. Likewise, an individual with no experience in martial arts who is seeking information concerning this specific area of Okinawa’s history will find this book an informative aid. |

| TALES OF OKINAWA’S GREAT MASTERS (SHOSHIN NAGAMINE & PATRICK McCARTHY)Shoshin Nagamine (1907 – 1997) was the founder of Matsubayashi-Ryu Karate-Do. He wrote The Essence of Okinawan Karate-Do, another valuable tome, in addition to this book. Practicing his art for more than 70 years, he achieved the rank of Hanshi (10th dan black belt) in karate and also earned black belts in judo, kendo, and sumo. He served as police chief of Naha City, and as an instructor of police judo teams in Okinawa, Japan. The guy not only knew his stuff, but was one heck of a good researcher. His insight into the titans of Okinawan martial arts is fascinating, a “must read” for any serious martial artist. Patrick McCarthy’s translations are extraordinary. The book is a quick, easy read, coming across as if it had been written by a native English speaker. McCarthy even translates haiku into poetic, user-friendly English.Nagamine Sensei spent a lifetime researching the budoka covered in his book. He trained and/or talked with some of them personally, interviewing the relatives and students of those who have passed on. He artfully portrays the exploits of Tode Sakugawa, Sokon Matsumura, Kosaku Matsumora, Anko Itosu, Gichin Funakoshi, Chotoku Kyan, Choki Motobu, Kanryo Higaonna and Ankichi Arakaki, to name a few, cutting through the fables and exaggerated legends to get to the truth. | ||||
| THE WEAPONLESS WARRIORS (RICHARD KIM)Here is a rare book—an informal history of Okinawan karate and its growth, told through vignettes about its most famous practitioners. This rare chronicle is one of the most thoroughly researched histories on Okinawan karate, with rare photographs of the earliest pioneers of naha-te, the empty-hand style of self-defense. An essential addition to any martial artist’s library. Kim, a judo and karate black belt, has studied shorinji-ryu kenpo and is an expert on karate history. | ||||
| OKINAWAN KARATE (MARK BISHOP)Written by a well-known figure in the Martial Arts community noted for his outspokenness, this book is an engaging and rich text, certain to provoke and please. | BUNKAI-JUTSU (IAIN ABERNETHY)Bunkai Jutsu is extremely well done. Iain Abernethy is one of the few authors who truly understands and is able to communicate that martial arts are at their core about combat. Kata is not dance practice nor is it aerobic training (though that may be a legitimate side benefit of performing it). It is the fundamental basis of a fighting art. Bunkai are the kata applications practitioners can use for real-life self-defense. Abernethy provides an easy to read approach to understanding and utilizing these applications.Iain Abernethy really knows his stuff. He holds a godan (5th degree black belt) in applied karate from the British Combat Association, one of the world’s leading groups for close-quarter combat and practical martial arts. He is also a yondan (4th degree black belt) in Wado-Ryu karate (English Karate Governing Body), a member of the Combat Hall of Fame, and a former national level kata judge in the UK. He is the author of four books on applied karate: Bunkai-Jutsu: The Practical Application of Karate Kata, Throws for Strikers: The Forgotten Throws of Karate, Boxing, and Taekwondo, Karate’s Grappling Methods, and Arm-Locks for All Styles. Sensei Abernethy has produced numerous DVD’s and videos on applied karate and kata bunkai and is a regular contributor to all of UK’s leading martial arts magazines. | ||||
| KARATE’S GRAPPLING METHODS (IAIN ABERNETHY)This is an outstanding tome which illuminates grappling, an all too often forgotten aspect of karate. These methods are frequently not practiced in many dojos simply because practitioners do not realize that they even exist within their system. On the street, however, karateka may face grapplers, boxers, and practitioners of a whole plethora of styles. The good news is that we have all the tools necessary to survive or triumph in any violent encounter, be it standing up or on the ground. In an art which has become overly focused on striking and kicking by many practitioners, this outstanding text will help you to practice the way it was meant to be–as an effective, holistic, and complete fighting system. It is well illustrated, easy to understand, practical, and very insightful. The author not only describes how grappling methods were recorded in karate kata and demonstrates a wide assortment of techniques, but he also describes the principles that make them effective in real-life fighting situations. | ||||
| KARATE : TECHNIQUE & SPIRIT (TADASHI NAKAMURA)This is a great primer book, printed on high quality paper. The techniques are standard karate type fare: Blocks, punches, and kicks. What makes this book such a collectable is that the author and publisher, write a beautiful introduction as to what the spirit of karate is really all about. They arrange the photos, biographies of students, demonstrations, and martial arts tenets in a masterful way. This book will probably not add much to the black belts (assuming he is well studied) knowledge of the subject of karate, but, it will add much to his vision on a masterful way to write and publish a karate primer book. He or she will further just enjoy the book for what it is: a great work of art.To the beginning or intermediate student, this book will engage his or her imagination. The section on ethical and moral values of karate is short, sweet, and to the point. The last chapter on “Karate Meditation Lectures” is outstanding and not pretentious. If you are a karateka – purchase this book for the beauty of it. | ||||

| ATTACK PROOF (JOHN PERKINS, ALBERT S. RIDENHOUR, MATT KOVSKY)Martial arts can teach people many important lessons about discipline, conditioning, and dedication. But as an effective means of self-defense and survival in brutal, real-world attacks, almost all martial arts come up short. This is because most self-defense applications of martial arts rely on patterned, choreographed techniques that have no relation to the chaos and randomness that rules during life-and-death fights.Attack Proof offers a dramatically different kind of self-defense system that really works. It’s based on the insights, real-world experiences, and forensic research of John Perkins, a New York cop who teaches hand-to-hand combat to military and police instructors. A survivor of over 100 documented armed and unarmed violent encounters, Perkins also engaged in unlicensed pit-fights and was a bodyguard with an international clientele. Revolutionary in its approach, the book helps you to become a master of random motion, or “guided chaos”, where you create a defense during attacks using principles of movement and physics. These principles are taught through many drills and exercises, which focus on improving balance, looseness, sensitivity, and power. |

| THE KARATE COLORING BOOK (TINA JOHNSON)It was nice to finally find a book for even our youngest Karate students. This coloring book has drawings from many different Karate styles so everyone can find some pictures that they can relate to. I was delighted to see that this was not just another coloring book full of drawings of men breaking bricks and boards. The drawings depict good stances and proper form in many karate techniques, not just kicking. I really enjoyed the fact that the drawings equally depict Men and Women. This is a great thing for our young female students that can often feel overwhelmed by the larger male population in most Dojo’s. I was very pleased that this coloring book depicted a more realistic idea of what we really study in Our Dojo and less of what “Hollywood” likes to call “Karate”. | ||||
