Origins of the Karate Ranking System

There have been many questions on how the karate ranking system came about, and why they are so colourful. In the beginning they were no ranking systems, until Funakoshi O’Sensei introduced karate to Japan proper. It is said he adapted the belt and ranking system from the judo system. The ranking system have evolved much since then, each school  with their own system and ranking.
